Wisdom Tooth Removal

Wisdom teeth, or third molars, start to appear during the late teens to mid twenties.

Often, this ‘teething’ process is accompanied with dull aches, soreness, pain on chewing or infected gums around the wisdom teeth. This is a result of the fact that most people have jaws that are too small to accommodate the arrival of a third molar. And even when there is enough room for the wisdom tooth to erupt in the mouth properly, the teeth are so far back that they are too difficult to keep clean which leads to cavities and eventually dental infection.

For these reasons, we usually recommend early removal of wisdom teeth before problems arise. Generally, extractions are easier on patients who are young and healthy because their tooth roots are shorter and less developed, and their bones are less dense. Usually, the easier the extraction, the quicker and more uneventful the healing.

A special x-ray is taken to assess the state of your wisdom teeth and to determine the appropriate time to safely remove them.
