Dental Polishing

Plaque is a soft, sticky, yellowish film consisting of bacteria and sugars that constantly forms on your teeth.

Plaque is an irritant to your gums and can cause gingivitis (inflammation of the gums). In addition, if plaque lingers on tooth surfaces for too long, the acidic by-products created by the bacteria eventually “melt” the tooth and create soft spots – these are called cavities, which necessitates fillings. People with good oral hygiene leave very little plaque on their teeth by brushing and flossing regularly, which results in fewer cavities and healthier gums.

As part of your dental cleaning appointment, our hygienists will polish your teeth which helps to remove plaque and also makes the tooth surface shinier and smoother. Plaque and bacteria have a harder time adhering to smooth surfaces as opposed to rough ones, helping to keep your gums and teeth healthy. External stains from coffee, tea, and chocolates are also removed by polishing.
